Hollywood Private Hospital addresses alcohol and substance dependency

Oct 03, 2016

A 12 day outpatient Alcohol and Substance Use Treatment Program at Hollywood Private Hospital’s (Hollywood) 70 bed inpatient and day patient mental health facility, The Hollywood Clinic, is helping patients to overcome alcohol and substance dependency and live a healthier life.

The program is designed for individuals who use alcohol, cannabis and prescription medications to excess. Participants are encouraged to change their behaviour and to more effectively deal with the factors causing the problem.

Program coordinator, Zoe Holt, explains “This program is essential to our patients as alcohol and substance abuse will progressively damage a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, and can severely impact their relationships with family and friends.”

“Excessive use of alcohol and drugs is often caused by an underlying factor, and it’s important the reason is recognised. This allows patients to understand why their relationship with a particular substance has become unhealthy and encourages recovery.”

“Support is delivered in a non-judgmental environment by a multi-disciplinary team which includes a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, social worker and mental health nurses. Through comprehensive support, patients’ specific needs can be met and their mental health assessed. It’s estimated that 30 to 50 percent of people with an alcohol and drug problem also have a mental illness.”

Based on successful patient outcomes and the inclusion of the latest industry findings and research, the program has been well received by the medical community. In addition to helping participants overcome unhealthy drug and alcohol use and develop strong coping mechanisms, it has also been proven to reduce depression, anxiety and stress.

Following their completion of the program, patients are encouraged to participate in a weekly relapse prevention support group. Ongoing care ensures participants are empowered to make healthier choices in their lives.

The Hollywood Clinic’s next Alcohol and Substance Use Treatment Program is due to commence   Monday 31 October, 2016. To learn more about the program, please visit hollywoodclinic.com.au
