Hollywood’s palliative care services further enhanced through generosity of local philanthropist
Jun 06, 2017
The generosity of philanthropist and Founder and Chairman of the Woss Group, Ronald Woss, will further enhance Hollywood Private Hospital’s (Hollywood) palliative care services.
To recognise the high quality care that his late father received as a patient at Hollywood, Mr Woss has donated monies annually to support the R. Woss Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2014 to enable members of the palliative care team to attend conferences and education courses they otherwise may not have been able to participate in.
Employees who have benefited from the scholarship have been very grateful for these opportunities, and have shared their acquired knowledge and skills with colleagues.
This year, the scholarship monies increased and the purpose of the support shifted from education to research. Funds from the R. Woss Scholarship ($10,000 annually) are now donated to the Hollywood Private Hospital Research Foundation (the Foundation).
Mr Woss said "My father spent his final days at Hollywood under the care of Dr Alice Phua, former Head of Palliative Care. The support we received from the team who looked after him was excellent and I’m pleased to be able to offer this scholarship."
"Through the initiative, I hope to encourage research that will positively impact the treatment and care for individuals and their families affected by terminal illness."
Hollywood has provided dedicated palliative care services to the community for the past 36 years.
Patients with a wide range of medical conditions are cared for by a team of health professionals including occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians, physiotherapists and psychiatrists. The team works together to improve the quality of a person’s life by focusing on their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Hollywood Chief Executive Officer, Peter Mott, added "The generosity of Mr Woss will help us to build upon the outstanding care and compassion we provide to patients and their loved ones through what are extremely difficult times in their lives."
"This support in the area of research comes at a very opportune time as we begin to implement Hollywood’s research strategy."
"Donations like this are greatly appreciated and are essential to helping the Foundation grow so we can continue to build upon the high quality care provided to members of the community."
