Top result nationally for Hollywood Gastro nurse
Nov 05, 2012
Marie Schmidt, Hollywood’s gastroenterological nurse of eight years has achieved the highest score nationally in the recent College of Gastroenterological Nurses (COGEN) exam in Adelaide.
The exam was conducted at the annual Australian Gastroenterology Week in October which allowed nurses to demonstrate and develop their knowledge and accumulate professional development points.
As well as testing Gastro general knowledge and skills, nurses had to study and have an in-depth knowledge of gastroenterology anatomy, physiology, infection control, pharmacology and endoscopic procedures and treatments. Prior to sitting the exam nurses are required to have three years’ experience in Gastroenterology as well as being recommended by three colleagues.
Asked how being COGEN top scorer will change her working life, Marie said it will make an enormous difference to her professional career.
“Becoming credentialed has given me a new sense of confidence in my gastroenterology nursing practice and will give me the opportunity to take on a more senior role in the department,” Marie said.
I now have the opportunity to share my knowledge and expertise with the other nurses and also develop and be recognised for my leadership skills.”
Clare Doney, Gastroenterology Clinical Nurse Manager believes Marie is an asset to the ward.
“We’re all very proud of Marie who embodies the Hollywood spirit on a daily basis,” Clare said.
