Hats off to Hollywood catering staff for reducing single-use plastics

Jun 28, 2021

Catering staff at Hollywood Private Hospital are wearing fabric reusable hair nets to brighten up the kitchen and reduce waste and landfill.

In a bid to reduce the use of single-use plastics at Hollywood, staff have moved away from disposable hair nets, which are made of nylon, polyester and/or polypropylene.

Catering manager Peter Trusler said staff had embraced the new environmentally friendly alternative.

“The catering staff were offered a selection of re-usable fabric hats to complement their uniform and wear while in the kitchen and on the wards,” Mr Trusler said.

“They are fun, hygienic and comfortable.”

Chief Executive Officer Peter Mott said the switch to fabric hair nets was an example of the many changes at Hollywood that made a significant impact on reducing the facility’s carbon footprint.

“We have significantly increased our waste recycling with initiatives such as turning PVC plastics into garden hoses,” Mr Mott said.

“Our efforts are part of Ramsay Health Care’s sustainability program Ramsay Cares.”

Ramsay Cares sets out how the company will make positive and meaningful changes to support healthier people, a greener planet and a stronger community.

In just one year, Ramsay Health Care had saved enough plastic single-use items to line the road from Melbourne to Cairns.

Ramsay sites kept have replaced 16 million single-use plastic items with sustainable alternatives, while 94 per cent of hospitals have committed to phasing out plastic water bottles.

Hollywoood Private Hospital catering staff Jessica Martin, Maria Topini, Leanne Thomas, Radhika Heuer and Valbona Fusha are expressing their bright personalities by wearing re-usable fabric hair nets.
