Hollywood Private Hospital staff celebrate ED milestone

May 26, 2022

It has been six-months since the $67 million emergency department (ED) opened at Hollywood Private Hospital.

Since the official opening on November 1 last year, more than 5000 patients have presented to the ED, with a number of these patients then admitted to hospital for further treatment.

Director of Medical Services John Maxwell said the ED had been embraced by the community.

“People appreciate having a choice and are grateful to have the option of private emergency care,” Dr Maxwell said.

“We aim to see patients in a timely manner and provide the best possible health outcomes.”

The most common presentations to the ED have been chest pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath and falls.

The ED is open to both private and public patients, who can either make their own way to the ED or arrive by ambulance.

It is the first private ED north of the river and is the second in WA. There is a $200 doctor’s consultation fee and referrals are not required.

Hollywood’s ED is supported by onsite senior emergency doctors, imaging and pathology.

“An important part of our ED is it is specialist-led, meaning patients can be seen by an emergency specialist,” Dr Maxwell said.

“Patients also have access to a range of medical and surgical services at Hollywood, such as cardiac care.

“In addition to this, there is nursing and allied health services onsite, as well as support in the home through Ramsay Connect.”

The ED is part of a $200 million investment by Ramsay Health Care, which operates about 50 EDs around the world, including 11 in Australia.
