Hollywood Private Hospital celebrates milestone with almost 10000 endoscopy patients in 12 months
Dec 16, 2021
Hollywood Private Hospital staff are celebrating a milestone with the endoscopy suite welcoming a record number of patients into the department in 12 months.
Clinical Nurse Manager Clare Doney said almost 10,000 patients had been helped at the endoscopy suite, the centrepiece of the $48 million Hollywood Consulting Centre, from October 2020 to October this year.
Director of Medical Services Dr John Maxwell said the endoscopy suite played a role in helping meet the health care needs of Western Australians.
“The facility provides patients with a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services in state-of-the-art surrounds,” Dr Maxwell said.
“The early detection and diagnosis of conditions such as cancer is resulting in better treatment options and increased survival rates.
“Since opening, we have introduced a number of specialised procedures at the endoscopy suite to help provide the best possible health outcomes for patients.”
Procedures introduced at the endoscopy suite include:
- Halo procedures or radiofrequency ablations (RFAS) – to help treat Barrett’s oesophagus, which can progress to a precancerous condition.
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatograms (ERCP) – to diagnose and help treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.
- Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) – used to diagnose lung cancer, infections and other diseases causing enlarged lymph nodes in the chest.
Chief Executive Officer Peter Mott said the endoscopy suite was incredibly important for providing the optimal care for patients.
“People diagnosed earlier with cancer are not only more likely to survive, but they also have lower treatment morbidity and improved quality of life compared to those diagnosed later,” Mr Mott said.
Some of the conditions treated at the endoscopy suite include inflammatory bowel disease, stomach ulcers, infections, polyps, tumours/cancers and pancreatitis.
The endoscopy suite is attended by over 30 specialists including gastroenterologists, general surgeons and respiratory physicians.
Mr Mott said demand for services at the endoscopy suite was expected to increase as more procedures are able to be performed endoscopically.
