Hollywood Private Hospital introduces Australian First Minimally Invasive Breast Surgery Technique
Jun 18, 2026
Hollywood Private Hospital has become the first private hospital in Australia to offer an advanced minimally invasive breast surgery (MIBS) technique, giving women with the inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and other genes mutation, access to a procedure that may reduce scarring, speed recovery and help preserve body confidence following surgery.
The innovative approach is being led by breast surgeon Dr Saud Hamza, who is the first surgeon in Australia to perform the key-hole procedure.
Dr Hamza said advances in surgical technology have the ability to transform breast surgery, enabling complex procedures to be performed through small incisions while reducing the physical impact of surgery and improving the patient experience.
“The introduction of minimally invasive breast surgery has the potential to represent a significant advancement in risk reduction and implant reconstructive breast surgery in Australia,” Dr Hamza said.
"Women who carry certain inherited gene mutations often face difficult decisions about reducing their future cancer risk.”
"This minimally invasive approach offers eligible patients an alternative surgical option that aims to reduce visible scarring, minimise tissue trauma and support faster recovery, while preserving the natural appearance of the breast."
Unlike traditional open surgery, minimally invasive breast surgery uses small incisions, typically around four centimetres in length, placed discreetly along the side of the chest.
Specialised high-definition three-dimensional imaging systems allow surgeons to view the surgical field with exceptional clarity and precision on large 3D displays.
Dr Hamza said enhanced visualisation helped surgeons identify important anatomical structures, including nerves and blood vessels, which may reduce the risk of complications.
"The advanced imaging technology provides excellent visualisation throughout the procedure, enabling highly precise surgery while minimising damage to surrounding tissues," he said.
"By reducing tissue trauma and blood loss, minimally invasive techniques have the potential to decrease postoperative complications while also improving patient comfort during recovery."
In addition to its physical benefits, the technique may also provide important psychological advantages by helping women maintain their body image following surgery.
"For many women, maintaining body image following risk-reducing surgery can have a significant positive impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing," Dr Hamza said.
"As technology continues to evolve and surgical expertise grows, minimally invasive breast surgery is likely to become increasingly important in breast care, helping deliver improved outcomes and experiences for patients."
Hollywood Private Hospital CEO Andrew Tome said the procedure reinforced the hospital's commitment to introducing innovative surgical techniques that improved patient care.
"Hollywood Private Hospital is proud to support innovation and provide patients with access to some of the most advanced surgical technologies available anywhere in the world," Mr Tome said.
