Perth cardiologist’s quest to raise $1m for The Orangutan Project

Mar 30, 2022

Hollywood Private Hospital cardiologist Kushwin Rajamani is on a mission to not only help improve the lives of his patients, but to also help protect the planet.

Associate Professor Rajamani is an ambassador for climate change, the protection of wildlife and saving the trees.

“Our children deserve a sustainable planet and I want to do my part to achieve this,” Dr Rajamani said.

Dr Rajamani’s latest focus is raising money to help save the rainforest in Sumatra.

He is matching donations (with up to $50,000 out of his own pocket) to reach a $1 million goal for The Orangutan Project, which aims to buy and protect 100,000ha of the Leuser Ecosystem.

“The Leuser Ecosystem is the last place on earth where critically endangered orangutans, elephants, rhinos and tigers coexist in the world,” Dr Rajamani said.

“Vast quantities of carbon are stored in Leuser’s rainforests, making it essential for global climate change mitigation.

“But the Leuser Ecosystem is under threat from poaching, illegal encroachment, mining and plantation development.”

Dr Rajamani has already helped raise almost $400,000 for The Orangutan Project.

A fundraising event is planned at Perth City Farm on Thursday, June 16.
