What is Cancer?

Leukaemia

Leukaemia is cancer of the body’s blood forming tissues and it usually affects the leukocytes or white blood cells.

Like other types of cancer, it is caused by abnormal and erratic cell growth and the excess cells crowd out healthy cells, preventing them from performing properly.

There are four main types of this cancer and some are more common in different age groups. The main types of leukaemia include acute, chronic, lymphocytic and myelogenous.

There are very good treatment options available for leukaemia and Hollywood Private Hospital has a range of doctors who specialise in treating this disease. Patients will typically be under the care of a haematologist.

Leukemia is usually treated with a range of different approaches and having access to many services and experts in one location can be very helpful for patients.
