Clinical Practice
Dr. Richard Clugston is an interventional cardiologist with primary interests in coronary angiography, angioplasty, and stenting for both stable angina and acute coronary syndromes. He has special expertise in managing acute myocardial infarction using direct angioplasty and played a key role in establishing Australia's first acute infarct angioplasty service. Additionally, Dr. Clugston focuses on structural heart disease, including the closure of patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defects, and percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion. This latter procedure is particularly significant for patients with atrial fibrillation, as it may reduce the need for warfarin by preventing emboli that cause strokes.
Background & Training
Dr. Clugston received his training in Perth and the USA. His extensive experience and expertise have made him a leading figure in the field of interventional cardiology, particularly in the management of acute myocardial infarction and structural heart disease.
