Clinical Practice

Professor Rukshen Weerasooriya is a cardiologist and subspecialist cardiac electrophysiologist based at Hollywood Private Hospital.

Professor Weerasooriya offers consultation and treatments for all heart rhythm disorders including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, SVT ventricular tachycardia. In addition to being a high-volume operator in performing catheter ablation procedures, he is also a high-volume implanter of cardiac rhythm devices such as pacemakers, loop recorders and implanted defibrillators.

The Heart Rhythm Clinic rooms are located at the Hollywood Consulting Centre and Professor Weerasooriya offers telehealth for rural patients and as an option for all patients who need or prefer to socially isolate. Email: (reception@heartrc.com.au)

Background and training

Professor Weerasooriya is a UWA graduate who completed cardiology training at Royal Perth Hospital. He commenced private practice in 2003 after returning from two years training overseas at the world’s leading centre for AF ablation – the Hopital Cardiologique du Haut Leveque in Bordeaux, France.

Having pioneered catheter ablation for patients suffering with atrial fibrillation in Western Australia, the clinic continues to be on the forefront of treatments, we are the first Australian practice offering HyCASA hybrid surgical and catheter ablation for more difficult to control cases of atrial fibrillation in partnership with cardiothoracic surgeons.

Professor Weerasooriya has developed a team-based approach to deal with the complexity and potential risks of managing patients with heart rhythm problems. The team includes dedicated electrophysiology technicians, physician assistants, specific cardiac cath lab nurses, a subspecialised nurse and a team of anaesthetists who all have high volume expertise in arrhythmia procedures.

Professional and Community Engagement and Research

Professor Weerasooriya is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UWA and the WA Chairman of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is a member of the medical advisory committee of the patient support charity Hearts4Heart. He is a committee member of Alliance Francaise de Perth.  He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UWA and maintains a position as visiting scientist at the LIRYC Institute of advanced cardiac arrhythmia mapping in Bordeaux.

Professor Weerasooriya is interested in the latest technological advances in diagnosis and treatment for rhythm disorders. He works alongside innovative start-up companies such as Alerte Digital Health to assist in developing innovative technologies to treat arrhythmia patients. He is almost continuously involved in international research studies to further improve understanding and knowledge about heart rhythm disorders.
