Clinical Practice
Dr. Bernadette McElhinney is a Specialist Gynaecologist with a particular focus on endometriosis, menstrual disorders, fibroids, and abnormal bleeding. She is also experienced in managing preinvasive diseases of the lower genital tract, performing specialised laparoscopic surgery, conducting colposcopies and treating cervical abnormalities, as well as providing IVF and fertility care. As well as regular operating list at Hollywood Private Hospital, Dr McElhinney operates at KEMH as part of the Endoscopy team, providing tertiary-level care for patients with endometriosis.
Background & Training
Dr. McElhinney completed her medical degree at Queen’s University Belfast in the UK. After finishing her basic registrar training, she moved to Perth to gain experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery. She spent a year in Australia in 2004, completing a fellowship with the Oncology Unit at KEMH. She returned to Australia in 2006 to take up a consultant post with the Endoscopy Team at KEMH and studied for a Master of Science in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy. Dr. McElhinney has over 20 years of experience in subfertility, endometriosis, and general gynaecology.
Research, Clinical Training
Dr. McElhinney is passionate about women’s health and aims to provide holistic and thoughtful care to her patients. She acknowledges the importance of teaching and mentoring junior colleagues, both formally and informally. She serves as a senior lecturer at Notre Dame University, regularly assisting with medical student tutorials and examinations. Dr. McElhinney has lectured and taught at national and international meetings. Recently, she was appointed as a director of Menopause Alliance Australia, a charity organisation aiming to educate women and their health providers on menopausal matters. She is dedicated to treating each patient as an individual, listening to their stories, and providing the resources to help them make informed decisions for the best possible outcomes in their fertility journey.
