Dr Jonathan Foo is a Specialist General Surgeon whose surgical practice is mainly focused on benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal pathologies such as reflux, hiatal hernia and gallbladder disease, gastric and oesophageal cancer and bariatric surgery.

Clinical Practice

Dr Jonathan Foo is a Specialist General Surgeon whose surgical practice is mainly focused on upper gastrointestinal, bariatric and general surgery. This includes benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal pathologies such as reflux, hiatal hernia and gallbladder disease and gastric and oesophageal cancer. Dr Foo operates at Hollywood Private Hospital and Glengarry Private Hospital. 

Background and Training

Jonathan completed his medical degree in 2004 and he undertook a PhD in bariatric surgery for which he was the recipient of the prestigious Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Health Research Council of New Zealand. This thesis was awarded the University of Otago Basic Science PhD prize in 2011 and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Sir Louis Barnett Prize in 2011.

Advanced Oesophago-gastric and Bariatric Fellowships

After completing his surgical training in New Zealand, he pursued further specialized post-fellowship training in Upper GI/Bariatric surgery through the College of Surgeons ANZGOSA program. He dedicated three years to intensive, high-volume advanced oesophagogastric and bariatric fellowships. These included stints at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, under the guidance of Mr Ahmad Aly, at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne, collaborating with renowned bariatric surgeon, and finally, with Professor Michael Griffin at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in the United Kingdom, a renowned oesophago-gastric unit with one of the highest case volumes globally. Additionally, he gained valuable insights through an invited observership at the National Cancer Institute Hospital in Tokyo.

Education and Publications

Jonathan has been an invited speaker at medical, education and surgical conferences internationally. He has published numerous journal articles, written a book chapter on oesophageal tumours, presented internationally and is a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Western Australia.
